Brightwell Baldwin is a picturesque village situated near Wallingford in South Oxfordshire. When RPA Architects were appointed to obtain planning permission for a replacement dwelling at The Spinney the site was occupied by a poor quality bungalow with no real architectural merit. As the gateway to the village it was important that the design of the new house not only provided a beautiful place to live, but also enhanced the journey into and through the village.
A traditional external appearance has been achieved through the design and careful selection of materials including brick, clay tiles and timber cladding of an appropriately high quality which relate well to the local vernacular. Many of the features incorporated within the design, such as the flat-roof, lead-clad dormer windows, can be seen elsewhere in the village and the new property has been quickly and easily assimilated into its wider environment.
Internally a modern country aesthetic has been achieved though the creation of bright, light open spaces suitable for modern family living.
