A good architect listens carefully to his or her clients' wishlist and takes time to understand their aims, their likes and dislikes. When we were approached Wansdyke was a unique but run-down 1960’s property occupying a steeply sloping site - it was clear that it held enormous potential but it was in need of extensive modernisation. Our clients were also keen to enlarge the property and they favoured a contemtporary solution.
Planning permission was obtained for a design which incorporates a number of imaginative features. Our proposals retained and complemented key design features including the existing butterfly roof, internal changes of level and elements built on ‘stilts’, but add contemporary twists.
The enlarged, remodelled and refurbished property provides thermally improved and sensitively updated elevations, a cosy modern interior, striking contemporary features and fantastic views over the rolling landscape of the Vale of the White Horse.
The project was awarded Highly Commended at the 2018 LABC Awards.
